Merstham Awarded Points

Merstham’s home game on Saturday 11th December 2004 was postponed when AFC Wallingford failed to fulfill their away Combined Counties League fixture at the Recreation Ground. Three players from the Wallingford side withdrew from the squad at the last moment, leaving only ten players ready to travel. Their club Chairman, Gerry O’Garr, and secretary, Richard May, made it very clear to the management team that it was essential that the match had to played, even with ten players, and that it would be completely unacceptable to ask for the game to be called off at such a late stage. Two cars had set off from Wallingford. However, due to the refusal of a single player, a third car did not begin the journey from Oxford. The six players travelling from Wallingford were nearing the half way stage of the journey when it became clear that the other players would not be leaving Oxford. At this point, the club had no choice but to recall the remaining players and inform Merstham of the circumstances.
Extensive discussions took place with all those involved on Sunday and Monday, and the AFC Wallingford management drew the following conclusions:

The match could and should have gone ahead even with ten players. The actions of one individual caused the game to be called off.
The club must take a large share of the responsibility for the problem arising in the first place. The club failed to ensure that new players joining the reserve squad over the past two weeks were also registered for the Combined Counties. This meant that not all reserve players were eligible and those that were could not switch to the first team for various reasons at such short notice. However, this eligibility problem could not have been solved on Saturday morning.
The club must be seen to take decisive action to ensure that such an event does not take place again in future, and more importantly to convince our future opponents and the Combined Counties League that such an event will not occur again.

Leading on from these conclusions the following action was taken on Monday 13th December:
The club accepted the resignations of first team managers Harold MacFarlane and Carl Henry. Reserve team manager Andy Gordon was asked to take on responsibility for the first team, and accepted the new role. The club will ensure that all reserve team players are registered for the Combined Counties as soon as possible
On Monday evening, the Club Chairman and Secretary May met with the Combined Counties League Management Committee and as a result of that meeting, AFC Wallingford were fined the maximum amount allowed under league rules and ordered to pay Merstham’s costs. The match was awarded to Merstham. However, the league applauded the actions taken by the club over this incident, and consequently forty per cent of the fine will be suspended until the end of the season.
