Merstham end their season with a hard fought but well deserved win at home to Colliers Wood. Both teams fielded a few young players to give them some senior football experience and all acquitted themselves admirably. For Merstham, 15 year old James Rooke who made his debut with the Reserves recently, was given his chance with the first 11 and gave a hugely impressive performance. He is certainly one to look out for next season. The game itself was a close affair for much of the 90 minutes, with a blustery wind making conditions difficult. It was Merstham who looked the more likely to score during the first 45, with Rhod Davis constantly causing the Colliers Wood defence problems. Despite these attacks however, Merstham were unable to convert their chances into goals, a problem which has contributed to their disappointing final league position this season. A well struck volley just
inside the box from Davis on 34 minutes which just went wide and a one-on-one chance for Adam Carvell which forced a great save from the keeper were probably Merstham's best chances of the first half.Colliers Wood have had a similar season to Merstham (this being their first in the league) with a strong start followed by a slow descent in the table. The visitors enjoyed some good play and possession in the middle of the pitch and their young forwards certainly kept the Merstham defence on their toes. Despite this though, Colin Harris was rarely called into action in the Merstham goal and the ever dependable Chris Boulter was always there to mop up any potential threats.0-0 at half time and despite their attacking dominance, Merstham still had plenty to do.
The second half was a similar close affair, but as with the first it was Merstham who looked the more likely to score. A great chance for Davis came on 60 minutes as again his pace caused problems for the Colliers back line. Unfortunately for Merstham and to the relief of the committed keeper, Davis took one touch to many before striking at an open goal, giving a covering defender the chance to block the shot.A couple of minutes later saw Davis again getting behind the opposing defence and put a low pacey cross into the box. To the frustration of the Merstham onlookers however, there were no amber and black shirts in the area to meet the cross and certainly call the keeper into action. The missed opportunity was almost severely punished at the other end as a break away attack from Colliers Wood called Harris into two successive saves. The attempt lifted the
visitors who were enjoying midfield dominance against a tiring Merstham but were still really restricted to long range shots which were comfortable for Harris. On 70 minutes, Merstham's persistence finally paid off as they took the lead. Merstham had won countless corners today but failed to really threaten with these set plays. A trademark in-swinger from Danny Fitzgerald appeared to be an easy catch for the unchallenged keeper. For whatever reason however the keeper fumbled the ball in front of the goal and it was Merstham defender Craig Vernon who pounced first, stabbing the ball into the back of the net. A somewhat fortunate and scrappy goal, but none the less, a deserved one for Merstham. Five minutes later and another goal for Merstham from yet another in-swinging corner from Fitzgerald. The young defender has scored a few from corners this season and here was another for his tally, although the wind certainly appeared to help the ball on.2-0 to Merstham who really did not look like losing, despite a late good chance for Colliers to pull one back.
The win lifts Merstham to a final league position of 16th. A disappointing final position and certainly an under-achievement for the team but after winning a trophy with the Premier Cup win, this has been a successful season for the club.

Combined Counties Premier Challenge Cup Final 29th April 2005
Merstham 3-0 AFC Guildford
WE DONE IT!
'KINGS OF KINGFIELD'
Merstham made their manager Mick Sullivan proud by defeating AFC Guildford 3-0 at Woking’s Kingfield Stadium, in the Combined Counties Premier Challenge Cup Final.
A most hospitable welcome by all officials at Woking and the Combined Counties League made Merstham feel comfortable keeping nerves to the minimum as they came face to face with their first Cup Final for 14 years, when they were runners up to Frimley Green in what was then called the Dan Air Class Elite Cup.
I don’t think anyone at Merstham could stress how important a victory against AFC Guildford would be in the hearts to everyone involved with the club especially Mick, the Players and most of all Chairman Ted Hickman who commented “I have dreamed of this day for many years and all I ask is make the club proud”.
A shaky start from both sides as cup final nerves set in from the off causing panic from both defensive areas. Merstham Keeper Colin Harris was tested six minutes in when a poor clearance by team mate Danny Fitzgerald hit the crossbar and was forced clear by centre back Craig Vernon and a great sigh of relief was heard from the Merstham fans. Both sides could not seem to hold the ball down, and control it with their own style of play, loosing the ball in vital goal scoring moments. Merstham got their first real opportunity of the game in the 28th minute when a great link between Emmy Barr-James and recently returned Jamel Carr found the fast pace of Rhod Davies but he missed his chance, shooting straight at AFC Guildford Keeper Arjuna Adlam. Merstham went from strength to strength with the players finding more confidence to attack the Guildford defence. With chances from long range
efforts by both central midfield players Mark Hunter and Adam Carvell Merstham definitely looked more dangerous with their strikes at goal. Mick Sullivan had quite a fright when Captain Chris Boulter was brought down by a poor timed challenge from Guildford’s Tony Mukabaa, who was rightly awarded a yellow card for his reckless tackle, luckily Boulter was not seriously hurt and only had a ripped sock for memory. Guildford seemed very laid back on the ball and, with Merstham’s strength and determination, it was only a matter of time before they opened the scoring. When in the 33rd minute a great run down the right hand side by Davies picked out Carr in a crowded six yard box to slip in a well deserved first goal for Merstham to send their fans wild. Merstham had a sudden boost in confidence with absolutely no sign of the nerves they had at the beginning of the game. A great working partnership between Carr and Davies caused the majority of the problems for Guildford and with
their quick thinking and pace they out classed anyone they came up against. With this in mind, Guildford rarely troubled Merstham Keeper Harris in the later stages of the half. In fact, it appeared that the AFC Guildford Manager Mick Wollen was quite pleased when referee Michael Rowley blew the half time whistle.
For all that have seen Merstham play throughout the season would agree that Merstham have not always been able to keep their early leads and that second half performances have been much to be desired. Thankfully, an encouraging half time team talk and pat on the back by Mick Sullivan was more than enough to keep Merstham focused at the start of the second half. This was proved when, a quick counter attack by Barr-James found Davies, who skilfully passed two Guildford defenders to let loose a powerful strike which keeper Adlam could not stop to put Merstham 2-0 up only three minutes into the second half. Merstham looked settled on controlling the game to keep their vital lead and somewhat frustrating the Guildford players in the process. Mick Sullivan seemed to keep the extra player back when it came
to attacking and set pieces just in case of an unexpected counter attack. This meant that Merstham’s ratio of chances were few and far between but they still had a hunger for goals getting a shot in when given the chance. As time rolled on, Merstham continued to hold the ball well and Guildford became more and more frustrated loosing their concentration on many occasions. It wasn’t long before Barr-James took advantage of Guildford’s lack of enthusiasm, tearing down the left hand side to find Carr running into the box who was tripped by a desperate Guildford defender. Referee Rowley pointed straight to the spot. “Penalty!” Some of the Guildford players went mad and reacted by head butting two Merstham players. In the meantime, an unused substitute from Guildford’s bench ran onto the pitch and angrily lashed out punching Rhod Davies in the side of the head and as he fell to ground began to kick him repeatedly. The whole game became out of control and took a long time to calm
down.
This disgraceful behaviour by Guildford must be noted as several Combined Counties League officials were there to witness the event. Hopefully the players involved will be dealt with accordingly as even their own ‘very embarrassed’ Chairman, Jim Betts, said “I can’t believe the actions that have taken place from my players, all I can do is deeply apologise for their actions”.
After the distraction had stopped, Merstham penalty taker Craig Vernon stepped up in the 90th minute to comfortably put away Merstham’s third and final goal of the game. A well justified goal as badly hurt ‘Man of the Match’ Davies had to be substituted due to a suspected concussion and sat out the rest of the game in the dressing room. A large amount of injury time had to be played but by then the game was all over and Mick Sullivan’s side were crowned winners of the Premier Challenge Cup. Luckily, Merstham did not have to go through the anguish of extra time, as they did when they last won the Cup 15 years ago against Chipstead in 1989-1990 season.
Merstham now add to their silverware already won by the Youth Teams making it a total of three trophy’s for the season. This performance has set high targets by which they are more than capable of beating providing everyone involved with the club can continue moving forward with the right frame of mind. In the time honoured phrase by Chairman Ted Hickman “Well done lads!”

Merstham v Frimley Green
Combined Counties Premier Division 23rd April 2005 Merstham 1-2 Frimley Green
Merstham’s last league game before their all-important Premier Challenge Cup Final was a disappointing set back, losing 1-2 to fellow strugglers Frimley Green.
A calm and collective start by Merstham produced several opportunities to score and did just so in the seventh minute of play, when a great run by Rhod Davies gave the home side the lead. Merstham continued to search for a second goal but even with the visitors conceding many set pieces the home side failed to take advantage of this due to poor contact with the ball. Frimley Green had a great chance to level the score with a suspect penalty due to a hard challenge by defender Danny Fitzgerald who ended up worst for wares hurting himself in the process, but the referee waved play on, infuriating the visitors dug out. Merstham seemed to look reasonably comfortable by the later stages of the half with the score remaining 1-0 at the break.
Frimley Green returned to the second half with greater confidence and strength to win the ball, taking charge of the game and for the first time Merstham looked troubled. Frimley Green’s persistence did take its toll when a harsh tackle on Luke Roberts caused Merstham Manager Mick Sullivan to make a forced substitution, a result of which his side seemed to lose their rhythm of play. Frimley Green took easy advantage of Merstham’s misfortune and soon after levelled the score after several attempts with a well-timed strike by Hollamby. Merstham never looked like getting back into the game and in the 85th minute Frimley Green took the lead when an unmarked Frimley Green player netted their vital winner.
Merstham’s continued run of poor results now stretches to ten games without a win and probably sees them as ‘underdogs’ in next weeks Cup Final. However, as in all steps of the game, a cup final can be a great leveller of sides and Merstham, on their day, most certainly can be up there with the best.

Cove v Merstham
Combined Counties Premier Division 16th April 2005 Cove 3 – 2 Merstham
Merstham played their last away league game of the season to Cove F.C. suffering their third defeat in a row, with only one win out of their last ten games.
A disappointing start for Merstham as Cove got straight underway hassling the visitors defence. Cove’s No.10 Luke Walker intended on keeping Merstham’s Chris Boulter on his toes being the instigator of most of the home side’s attacks. Then, with only 9 minutes played, a low tight-angled shot by Walker tore past Merstham’s goalkeeper, Colin Harris, to put Cove deservedly 1-0 up. Merstham fought back but with little effort causing no real threat to Cove at all. Then in the 23rd minute, a menacing Walker made a frightening run and found himself with enough space to fire another dangerous shot, which found the back of the net putting the home side 2-0 ahead. Following Cove’s second goal Merstham looked on edge making many mistakes in all areas of the field but managed to stop any further goals from the home side, remaining 2-0 at half time.
Merstham started the second half a much brighter side and only one minute into the half a cheeky flick by Emmy Barr-James found Neil Campbell who pushed in Merstham’s first goal of the game. The improved visitors did not stop there and continued to play the ball inside Cove’s half in search of that vital equaliser. After a series of missed opportunities, Merstham equalled the score by another strong strike by Campbell but it was not enough when only minutes later Cove took the lead once again. A disheartened and worn out Merstham side could not come back from this bitter blow and the score remained 3-2 full time.

Merstham v AFC Guildford
Combined Counties Premier Division 12th April 2005 Merstham 0-1 AFC Guildford
A League Cup Final ‘dress rehearsal’ match between Merstham and AFC Guildford in the Combined Counties League went horribly wrong for the home side, losing three points and any edge they may have had over the visitors for their all important cup final showdown at Woking’s Kingfield Stadium on Friday 29th April 2005.
Merstham kicked off the game with what seemed to be a stronger side compared to recent games. With the return of goalkeeper Colin Harris and Midfielder Geoff Richards, along with several other changes to the squad you would have hoped that an instant impact would be made on the game, especially as AFC Guildford’s top goal scorer, James Blason, was not listed in the line up due to suspension. Merstham seemed to look refreshed holding the ball and getting forward regularly forcing pressure on a laid-back AFC Guildford defence. Even though the home side were keeping frequent possession, they lacked that final creativity to open the score. Unfortunately, a counter attack by the visitors found space for Mark Joyner and with help from poor defending by Merstham, Joyner was allowed to snatch an undeserved goal in the 26th minute, to put his side in the lead. This incident was a crucial turning point of the game for Merstham who looked extremely disheartened by AFC Guildford’s
lead, changing their whole approach to the game. The score remained 0-1 at the break.
The second half continued poorly for Merstham finding it hard to raise their spirits to get back into the game and because of this AFC Guildford had many opportunities to increase their lead but failed to capitalise on any.Merstham desperately needed a goal to boost life back into them, but they did not have the right attitude on the night. The second half remained goalless with AFC Guildford taking all three points with a 0-1 win.

Bedfont v Merstham
Combined Counties Premier Division 9th April 2005 Bedfont 3-1 Merstham
Not at all 'plane' sailing for Merstham!
Merstham’s trip away to The Orchard ground was always going to be a tricky game for the visitors, with their devastating recent run of results compared to a flawless Bedfont’s the home side showed no mercy in taking all three points.
Merstham started the game reasonably well defending the ball well in the box as Bedfont took control trying to get an early goal, but an alert Merstham side were aware and dealt with every ball thrown at them. Bedfont’s desire and determination to take charge of the game was keeping the ball mainly inside Merstham’s half making it difficult for Merstham to push players forward into attacking positions, therefore no opportunities were made posing no threat to the home side. Merstham desperately needed to change their style of play and get a firm grip of the game but their minds began to wander and in the 36th minute a cross from Bedfont’s Adam Willis found Mark Postins unmarked at the far post to perform a powerful downward header to clench a well deserved lead.Bedfont continued to pursue the Merstham goal thirsty for a second but the visitors were saved by the referee’s half time whistle.
Merstham had a terrible start to the second half with Bedfont’s second goal coming only one minute into play, Merstham seemed to look like they hadn’t even come out the dressing room either that or they were the too busy looking at the planes coming to and fro from a nearby Heathrow Airport. Bedfont seemed to thrive on their performance winning vital balls in all areas of the pitch. Merstham’s Manager Mick Sullivan needed something amazing to change this game around but unfortunately a poor clearance by Scott Kenwood after a Bedfont attack set up Danny Buckle who skilfully worked his way through two defenders to take an awkward angled shot which Kenwood failed to deal with to put the home side 3-0 up.
Not quite the inspiration Merstham Manager Mick Sullivan was thinking of as time had almost made sure of no come back now for the visitors. Merstham striker Micky Nolan did cushion the blow for his sides poor show with a late consolation goal making sure that Bedfont did not get the clean sheet as well as the victory.

Westfield v Merstham
Combined Counties Premier Division 5th April 2005 Westfield 2-2 Merstham
A difficult trip to Woking Park on recent results for Merstham saw an even game for both sides with a 2-2 draw.
Merstham kicked off the first half looking an improved side compared to last Saturday’s poor performance. With Manager Mick Sullivan making a few changes to the side to play a 3-5-2 formation, allowing a debut start for experienced player Emmy Barr-James who made an immediate impact on the game. Both sides were playing well producing several chances but set pieces from both sides seemed to be the most threatening with both goalkeepers busy.
Westfield started to take the edge pushing forward with some great collective passing when in the 24th minute, and against the run of play, an impressive counter attack by Merstham saw Mark Hunter dribble the ball 50 yards and find Luke Roberts in space. Roberts took a great first touch and fired the ball straight over Westfield keeper Geoff Smyrk, to put the visitors one up. Unfortunately, Westfield’s persistence paid off 10 minutes later when Craig Moore’s free kick took a cheeky deflection to send Merstham keeper Mark Torcaso the wrong way to put the home side back in the game.More chances followed but neither side could take the lead before half time with the score remaining 1-1.
Merstham got the second half off to a great start when a free kick by Roberts found the head of Barr-James who put the visitors back in the lead in the 51st minute. Merstham just needed to keep the lead and not give away any cheap chances and did just that almost through the rest of the second half. Then in the dying minutes of the game Merstham keeper Torcaso was penalized for handball outside his area, something which the linesman had warned him of earlier on in the game, to give away a late free kick just outside the box. Westfield’s Craig Moore hit home the free kick just minutes before the final whistle.
Merstham, though a little disappointed with not getting all three points, should take heart from a much improved performance and with a little improvement can give an inform Bedfont a run for their money this coming weekend.

Merstham v Feltham
Combined Counties Premier Division 2nd April 2005 Merstham 0-2 Feltham
A dark cloud fell over the Recreation Ground as Merstham lost their fourth consecutive game crushing any chance of a top half finish in the Combined Counties Premier League this season.
With Feltham only one place below Merstham, both sides knew at this point of the season how crucial this result could be. However, unfortunately a disheartened home side performance gave no contest to Feltham who comfortably strolled to an easy victory with a 0-2 win.
Merstham now have only one point out the last five league games and by far their worst run of results this season. A major confidence boost is needed to end their league season on any sort of high.
Peter Lang (GK), Craig Vernon (Steve Roleio-Doe), Danny Fitzgerald, Chris Boulter, Russ Morgan (Adam Carvell), Luke Roberts, Bradley Imms, Mark Hunter, Micky Nolan (Balford Brown), Rhod Davies, Scott Sullivan.
A touch of deja-vous as Merstham feel robbed of points as a worthy performance is once again undermined by poor officials. The man in the middle was probably the worst referee seen at Weldon Way this season and his diabolical decisions assisted the probable league champions to their double (controversial) win over Merstham.
A strong start from the league leaders was rewarded quickly on 10 minutes with a simple goal from a throw in and cross into the box. A deserved goal from the much sharper visitors as Merstham tried to find their rhythm. 10 minutes later and Walton grab a second following a dubious free-kick decision. The goal that followed was all purely Merstham at fault however, as once again this season a midfielder was allowed to run from deep and untracked at goal. The final shot on the edge of the box was low and wide giving Peter Lang in goal no chance.2-0 to Walton and some may have thought game over. Merstham however were not going to give up that easily and were enjoying some good play without really pressurizing the Walton goal. Then on 21 minutes Merstham were rightly awarded a penalty after Micky Nolan was pulled down in the box. Craig Vernon stepped up and converted the chance for Merstham's first of the evening.
Merstham should of perhaps been awarded a second penalty not long afterwards as Rhod Davies appeared to be fouled in the box. Davies who's runs caused all sorts of problems for the Walton defence got into the box from a wide position and just after putting a cross over was crudely brought down. Apart from the earlier penalty decision, the referee wasn't giving much to Merstham and he certainly wasn't going to award two penalties on one night!
The 1st goal for Merstham was important in the game but probably the biggest turning point was around 25 minutes when Luke Roberts came on for an injured Marc Rollings. Roberts, himself slightly injured was brought on somewhat sooner than anticipated by manager Sullivan but he had an instant impact on the game. Good link up play between him and Davies saw a dangerous ball flashed across the Walton goal mouth. A defender just in front of his keeper tried to connect and clear the danger but ended up deflecting the ball at his own goal. Fortunately for Walton the keeper was at hand to prevent the OG.The keeper was unable to prevent Merstham's second on 37 minutes as a great cross from Mark Hunter found Roberts drifting in behind the defence into the box. A great first touch was followed by an unstoppable strike to give Merstham their deserved equaliser. Merstham could have taken the lead just before the interval as good open play, again instigated by Roberts
ended with a close range effort by Nolan. Unfortunately the forward could not get enough power whilst spinning into the shot and so it stood 2-2 at half time.An entertaining first half for the spectators but there was more to come and controversy during the second 45.
Walton again started strongly and forced an early mistake by Lang in goal who picked up a back pass. Walton could not punish Merstham for the mistake and again a few minutes later when a failed punch clearance from Lang left him on the floor out of his goalmouth. Fortunately, a follow-up strike from Walton went wide. The game was starting to open up a bit now and on 55 minutes at the other end, Merstham almost took the lead themselves. A well worked corner found the head of Mark Hunter who's goal bound effort hit the crossbar. Apart from the early chances for Walton, Merstham were perhaps just edging the play and looked the more likely to score. It was therefore a complete shock on 77 minutes when the referee lost his head and handed Walton a golden opportunity to score.A midfield challenge was blown for a foul by the referee who then raised his arm and indicated a free kick for Merstham. The entire ground and more importantly the Merstham defence saw this and
relaxed, obviously presuming there was no danger. However, before you knew it and whilst the referee was chatting to a Merstham player, a Walton player took the free kick himself, feeding the ball to the forward who unchallenged went on to score. A huge uproar followed for this obvious error by the official, yet instead of quite rightly admitting the mistake and requesting a retake, he indicated a goal for Walton. An absolutely unbelievable decision made by a completely incompetent individual to the cost of Merstham. The protests that followed were completely ignored by the referee who didn't even choose to explain his decisions to a furious Mick Sullivan but instead ordered him off the pitch. Sullivan is a passionate manager and this has often gotten him into problems with match officials but you cannot blame him this evening when these PAID individuals make such incompetent decisions. The whole ground was reeling when the game finally got underway again.
Merstham who had looked so strong and in control were now chasing an equaliser, whilst Walton's confidence was boosted by their stroke of luck.Merstham's luck was certainly missing today though and despite a couple of chances, could not find the 3rd goal. Walton however or should I say the referee had not finished at at the other end and another dubious free kick was awarded just outside the Merstham box. The home side were caught a bit on the back foot and allowed a Walton player into the box onto goal. Bradley Imms who had been brought on for the injured Scott Sullivan tried to put a challenge in but ended up conceding a penalty. It was without a doubt a penalty but the officials had one more card (literally) to play as they sent off the wrong player for the challenge. The recently returned Russ Morgan had only been on the pitch for about 10 minutes went he was given his marching orders despite Imms admitting the foul. The
resulting penalty was well taken and with just minutes to go, gave the visitors a rather flattering and fortunate final scoreline.
We do hope that the referee Mr. Hourigan, goes back to finishing school and certainly does not make an appearance at a Merstham fixture again!

Chipstead v Merstham FC
Combined Counties Premier Division 28th March 2005 Chipstead 1 – 0 Merstham
A disappointing local derby Bank Holiday fixture away to Chipstead saw Merstham defeated for the second time this season by what seems to be their bogey side.
Merstham’s constant battle this season to finish in the top half of the table took another sharp blow 3 minutes into the game when Chipstead’s No. 10, Kwab Agyeni, showed Merstham his side meant business by opening the scoring with a solid shot provided by team mate Herve King which keeper Peter Lang could not stop. Not quite the start Merstham Manager Mick Sullivan was hoping for but he made sure his side had to wake up fast if they were take any part in the game at all.
Even though this poor start shook Merstham, they did provide themselves with some attempts at goal but a solid and alert Chipstead gave them confidence to deal with each ball calm and collectively making the visitors no real threat in the first half. The score remained 1-0 at the break.
Merstham returned from the dressing room a better side winning the ball in vital areas of the pitch. They seemed to be building their confidence back up with long range shots by Craig Vernon and Luke Roberts who made sure that they gambled on any loose ball in the Chipstead box. This provided extra chances for Merstham and for the first time Chipstead’s keeper Dean Rose looked troubled.
As the game moved on, Merstham’s good second half performance seemed to fizzle out with poor defending and man marking letting them down to allow Chipstead attempts to secure their lead.
Merstham were running out of time to find an equaliser and made tactical changes in hope to find it but it was too late as the damage had been done and the score remained 1-0 at full time.
Merstham’s inconsistent league run leaves them with only two wins out the last ten games and 8 points out the last 30. Merstham need to start scoring goals as good performances alone unfortunately do not win games.
Peter Lang (GK), Craig Vernon, Andy Cruther, Chris Boulter, Balford Brown, Mark Hunter, Bradley Imms (Danny Fitzgerald), Luke Roberts (Russ Morgan), Micky Nolan, Rhod Davies, Steve Roleio-Doe (Adam Carvell).
Merstham’s first game with AFC Guildford this season turned sour when another good performance, and lead, was lost and Merstham dropped yet another place in the Premier League table.
After postponed and abandoned fixtures this long awaited visit to the Spectrum got underway with a comfortable start for Merstham dealing with the experienced side well.
Merstham controlled the ball well throughout most of the first half dominating the flow of the game. Many chances at goal were produced by the visitors and it seemed like former Guildford player Micky Nolan and strike partner Rhod Davies had goals in their sights and Guildford keeper Arjuna was forced to make vital saves to keep Merstham at bay.
Guildford got their first real opportunity of the first half in the 33rd minute when they curled in the first corner of the game and the ball had to be cleared off the goal line by Scott Sullivan. Merstham continued to hassle the home side and towards the end of the half the visitors deserved to be in front but even strong attacks of set pieces by Luke Roberts and Sullivan could not break Guildford’s back four and the score remaining 0-0 at the interval.
Both sides started the second half well with the game more even and open for either side to take an early lead but with both sides defence playing well it was going to take something special to break the deadlock. Then, in the 67th minute, a good build up by Merstham found Roberts’s with space who let loose a powerful long range shot which swerved into the top right hand corner of the net leaving Guildford’s keeper stunned.
Following the goal Guildford showed their ability to press on and up the tempo of the game providing themselves with better chances, which Merstham could easily take a lesson from, as yet again the lead did not seem to drive them on for another goal as they sat back and relaxed instead.
Guildford’s persistence paid off in the 80th minute when Merstham’s defence fell asleep to give Guildford substitute Lydon the equaliser to put them deservedly back in the match.
Merstham seemed to lose any advantage they had and it wasn’t long before Guildford’s top goal scorer James Blason took a piece of Merstham’s misfortune in the closing minutes of the game with a long range shot which the Merstham keeper Peter Lang could not prevent to give Guildford the late winning goal.
With the likelihood of Merstham facing Guildford in the final of the Premier Challenge Cup Merstham will need to tighten up in a few areas if they want any chance of silverware this season.

A desperately needed 3 points for Merstham was thwarted by Godalming and Guildford striker Danny Newman who skilfully netted two goals past Merstham’s defence to extend their unbeaten run to nine games.
Merstham started well with the home side producing several opportunities but lacked that final through ball to their attackers which was where Godalming and Guildford seemed that much stronger especially when they caught Merstham on the break.
Merstham’s good strength and determination from central midfield were keeping the ball out of harms way with Mark Hunter and Adam Carvell showing great control and discipline throughout the game. Merstham’s good all round first half performance was shattered when in the 41st minute Godalming and Guildford’s Newman took a quick turn on the ball and sent keeper Colin Harris to wrong way to put his team ahead in the closing minutes of the first half. Merstham came out the second half unaffected by the visitors first half lead and tried desperately to get back into the game and in the 55th minute a free kick by Man of the Match Hunter found the head of Micky Nolan who levelled the score to put Merstham back in the game. Unfortunately, 8 minutes later Godalming and Guildford’s striker Newman became a bit of a concern to Manager Mick Sullivan when the pressure asserted by the number 10 led to his second goal with a great run from 35 yards to put the visitors back in
the lead.
Merstham continued to fight refusing to give up on the game, something they lacked in previous games, when in the 80th minute Nolan returned the favour and assisted Hunter in scoring the equaliser making it his third goal in two games.
A ridiculous decision by referee Roberts saw Craig Vernon receive his second yellow card for apparently “sarcastically clapping” the referee which was taken the wrong way reducing Merstham down to 10 men. Both sides pressed on eager to find that winning goal but the score remained 2-2 at full time.

A disappointing performance compared to the weekend cup fixture saw Merstham draw 1-1 at home to Cobham FC.
From the whistle, Cobham got off to a good start pressing Merstham’s half from all angles, but it looked like Merstham’s heads were still in the clouds from reaching the League Cup Final. It seemed to take a lot of time and encouragement from the home bench before Merstham could string any decent passes together and cause any kind of impact on the game. There was only one real chance for either side to score in the first half but on both occasions the ball hit the upright. The score remained 0-0 at half time.
Merstham’s dreadful performance continued in the second half with the home side switching off their game yet again allowing Cobham chance after chance. Then, in the 67th minute, a silly late tackle by Craig Vernon left referee, Graeme Train, with no choice but to award the visitors with a penalty. Cobham’s Chris Clark stepped up and scored to give Cobham the lead. Drastic actions were needed to get Merstham into the game. Formation was changed from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2 and substitutions made to adjust to the change of play. Luckily, Manager Mick Sullivan’s gamble of playing substitute Lyndon Greenleas out of position paid off when in the 82nd minute Greenleas lobbed the keeper from 20 yards to equalise. Merstham did have a chance to go ahead in the closing minutes of the game when a Rhod Davies shot hit the crossbar. With Merstham’s poor performance they should count themselves lucky to come away with a point.

Merstham’s Captain Chris Boulter
secured his team a place in the final of the Premier Challenge Cup with a late
winner at home to Chessington and Hook.
This exciting semi-final fixture got underway fast with both sides playing a
3-5-2 formation but Merstham’s marking was looking a little rough around the
edges as they are so used to playing a 4-4-2 formation as shown in previous
games. This led to domination in the midfield area during much of the first
half with few chances made by either side.
The determination and eagerness to win the ball forced a clash of heads which
led to Craig Vernon having to receive treatment for a gash to the head in the
opening minutes.
The first chance of the game came when Chessington and Hook’s Burns shot was
cleared off Merstham’s line by defender Vernon which rattled the Merstham
defence. With the combination of Rhod Davies and Luke Roberts Merstham managed
to upset the Chessington & Hook defence on several occasions especially when the
pace of Geoff Richards on the wing was in force. Merstham’s first real
opportunity came on the stroke of half time when a great run from Davies passed
several players but the finishing pass to Adam Carvell was too long allowing
Chessington & Hook defence to regroup. The score remained 0-0 at half time.
In the second half Merstham returned to their usual formation of 4-4-2 with the
hope that the players would feel more comfortable in their positions knowing
their jobs well. As the game progressed Merstham seemed to lose their passion
towards the game needing an urgency to step up a gear if they were to score and
go on and win the game. Merstham had a great opportunity to go one up in the 64th
minute when a header by Boulter was nervously cleared off the goal line by the
Chessington & Hook defence. This effort put a spring back into Merstham’s play
with another chance following straight after when a pass by Davies found
Richards but was sadly offside. With both sides upping their tempo in the dying
minutes of the game, which could have gone either way, Merstham’s fighting
spirit came out on top when a well taken corner by Roberts found the head of
Boulter who made sure he didn’t miss this time with a magnificent well timed
header to secure Merstham place in the final of the Premier Challenge Cup at
Woking. Merstham look forward to playing either AFC Guildford or Ash United in
the final who play their semi-final tie on 6th April 2005.
An over the moon Manager Mick Sullivan said “I am absolutely chuffed to bits
personally and elated for the players and the club as it’s their first major
final for many years. All we’ve got to do now is go out and win it. It is ours
for the taking and it will be a brilliant all round day out”.

Farnham Town v Merstham FC
Combined Counties Premier Division 8th March
2005
Farnham Town 2 – 1 Merstham
With
this Saturday's Challenge Cup Semi-Final in mind Merstham's Manager Mick
Sullivan rested some of his key players and fielded a somewhat inexperienced
side. Both sides did not play particularly well and although Merstham faired the
better, the first half was pretty uneventful. The first real chance came in
the 43rd minute when Steve Roleio-Doe took at shot but hit the
cross bar. Further pressure paid off though, and in the 45th minute, Merstham's
Neil Campbell scored the first goal of the game putting home a cross from Luke
Roberts.
The second half was much the same as the first with neither side particularly
troubling the other. Merstham had the best chances but could not find the
finishing touch. Substitutions were made and Merstham seemed to lose their way
and in the 69th minute, Farnham's Luke Turkington got the equaliser. Merstham
tried to play for a draw but Farnham had gained the upper hand and 10 minutes
later Farnham's substitute, Gary Parker, scored with a downward header, just
beating Merstham's debut keeper Mark Torcaso, thus giving Farnham the winning
goal.
The game finished 2-1.

On a cold crisp day, Merstham
travelled to North Greenford. The day was dry but the pitch was very wet
underfoot and the slope with the tail wind blowing down it, inevitably made this
a game of two distinct halves.
North Greenford, kicking down wind, got off to a flying start when in the 3rd
minute a free kick from Mills hit the bar, Lukeman’s shot from the rebound was
parried but Hill followed up for an easy goal, 1–0. North Greenford continued to
press and in the 15th minute a break away down the left resulted in a
good cross giving Read a free unmarked header and he duly obliged, 2-0.
Merstham were playing poorly but did manage to find their form enough to hold
the score at 2–0 at half time even though North Greenford had several more
chances forcing Merstham keeper Colin Harris to make two good saves.
The second half started with Merstham now playing down wind and looking the
better for it. Micky Nolan hit a direct free kick just over the bar and then
shot just wide after linking up with Matt Jeffreys who was substituted, having
received an ankle injury in the attack. In the 75th minute Rhod
Davies crossed from the right, the ball bobbled about in the box and was finally
squeezed in by Chris Boulter, 2-1. Immediately after this the homeside keeper,
misdirected a back pass straight to Nolan who unfortunately for Merstham shot
just past the post. In the 80th minute, the homeside broke away,
Merstham keeper Harris made a bad mistake by not clearing the ball to safety,
and North Greenford’s Hill lobbed him for his second goal of the game, 3-1
The game remained as such, until the final whistle. A story of two halves. A
draw was possible for Merstham but mistakes and missed chances cost them dearly.

Poor weather and pitch
conditions at the Recreation Ground led to yet another defeat for Merstham with
Raynes Park clinching a 3-2 win.
Both sides started well but with a great opportunity for Merstham’s Steve
Roleio-Doe in the 5th minute saw them create their first chance of
the game. Merstham seemed to be playing the better football holding the ball
well in midfield when in the 14th minute a series of good one touches
in the box led to Merstham’s Kevin Molloy scoring his first goal of the season.
Merstham’s frightening ability to lay back on the ball after their lead troubled
them once again allowing the visitors to raise their heads a lot quicker than to
be expected and create opportunities as a result of this. To this end, Raynes
Park were managing to win first and seconds of any balls played allowing Rawle
Kendall to score their equaliser in the 34th minute. The score
remained
1-1 at half time.
Merstham appeared the second half a lot brighter, controlling the ball well and
winning those vital balls, which they hadn’t managed to do in the later stages
of the first half. Merstham’s ability paid off in the 53rd minute
when a clearance by the Merstham defence found space for Micky Nolan who lobbed
keeper, Ed Cornwell, from 25 yards out to give Merstham back the lead.
Disappointingly, Merstham seemed to fall asleep once again allowing Raynes Park
to pull themselves back into the game in the 66th minute with Paul
Jordon scoring the equaliser. Following this, a disillusioned Merstham failed
to pick themselves up and 8 minutes later, Raynes Park took the lead with Jordon
scoring his second of the game.
The last 10 minutes were frantic as Merstham threw everything they could at the
Raynes Park defence but failed to score that vital equaliser. Sweet revenge for
Raynes Park for the thrashing Merstham gave them at the beginning of the reason
with a 6-1 win away.
If Merstham want to finish the season in the top half of the table they need to
learn not to rest on their laurels after taking the lead in matches.

Cove FC v Merstham FC
Premier Challenge Cup 4th Round 22nd February 2005 Cove 1 – 4 Merstham
An overall
good performance saw Merstham stroll into the semi-final of the Premier
Challenge Cup with a comfortable win over Cove.
Cold and icy conditions made it hard for either side to judge balls played
causing a slow start to the game. Merstham had their first opportunity in the 9th
minute when a fast whipped in cross by Craig Vernon forced Cove’s keeper Craig
Green to spill the ball but unfortunately no Merstham player was near enough to
finish. Merstham continued to hassle the Cove defence when in the 18th
minute Merstham got their first break when a long range shot by Rhod Davies hit
the crossbar and bounced down just before the line for Steve Roleio-Doe to
follow up for Merstham’s first. Merstham’s spirit was now on a high when their
second goal followed two minutes later when a Danny Fitzgerald cross created an
opportunity for Captain Chris Boulter to score with a downward header. Now on a
roll, and only six minutes later, Merstham could not believe their luck when a
corner taken by Geoff Richards found Adam Carvell to score Merstham’s third.
Still piling on the pressure Merstham made several more attempts with set pieces
and great passing. They had now seemed to have found a recipe for success but
in the 33rd minute, against the run of play, Merstham came unstuck
when a flick by Michael Confrey set up Cove’s player manager, Koo Dumbuya, for a
missed timed shot which luckily for him went through Colin Harris’s legs and
tricked into the net. This slowed down Merstham’s game with no real chances
following making the score 1-3 at half time.
The second half was not as eventful with few chances from either side. All
Merstham needed to do was keep their lead. With Cove’s lack lustre performance
it was only a matter of time before Merstham secured that semi-final place when
in the 66th minute a channel pass by substitute Jamie David provided
Bradley Imms with a powerful shot at goal which Cove’s keeper Green could not
stop for Merstham’s fourth injuring himself in the process.
With the keeper obviously in a bad condition, the game was stopped and with the
advice of the physio and referee, he was stretchered off and an ambulance
called. Due to the injury, Cove were forced to make substitutions and the game
continued.
With both sides concerned over the injury, the game never really got back into
full swing and the final 20 minutes were uneventful with Merstham winning 4-1.
A spokesperson for the club commented "that although we are very happy with
the victory, our celebrations were subdued by the injury to Cove’s goalkeeper,
we wish him all the best for a speedy recovery."
Merstham now
face either Walton Casuals or Chessington & Hook at home in the semi-final.

Southall FC v Merstham FC
Combined Counties Premier Division 19th February 2005 Southall 2 – 1 Merstham
A poor game
all round at The Meadow saw Merstham’s first loss in six games to Southall in a
disappointing Saturday fixture which neither side really deserved to win.
Merstham got underway with a great chance in the opening minutes by Micky Nolan
but failed to finish as fine work from Southall’s keeper Jason Hartles took
charge. Merstham’s good start to the game was punished when in the 8th
minute a counter attack by Southall found Donal O’Sullivan in what was a
blatantly offside position to score an undeserved opener. Merstham’s momentum
was lost after the hotly disputed goal, with Merstham sitting too deep with
their laid back approach, allowing Southall to dwell on the ball controlling the
tempo of the game. With Southall playing well many chances followed. Their
second goal came in the 25th minute with an overhead scissor kick by
Andre Robinson leaving Merstham keeper Colin Harris without a chance. Merstham
had a great opportunity to pull one back with a header by Chris Boulter but
failed, summing up Merstham’s first half performance. The score remained 2-0 at
half time.
Merstham played better football in the second half with a chance in the 49th
minute from Geoff Richards which the crowd thought was in but the ball brushed
passed the outer netting. Merstham’s persistence paid off in the 53rd
minute when substitute Jamie David’s powerful header found captain Boulter to
head home Merstham’s first and only goal of the game to make up for his lost
chance in the first half. As time went on, substitutes were made by Merstham to
try and get their deserved equaliser but despite pressing on, Merstham could not
penetrate Southall’s strong and powerful back four with the score finishing 2-1
to the home side.

Southern Combination Cup Third Round 15th
February 2005
Cobham
2 – 2 Merstham
(Merstham won 6 - 5 on penalties)
This long cold evening saw visitors
Merstham secure their place in the semi-final of the Southern Combination Cup
winning 5-6 on penalties in sudden death.
The third round tie started very fast with chances from Rhod Davies getting
straight underway hassling the Cobham defence. Even though the game seemed
to be played slightly in Merstham’s half, Merstham had the edge on the break.
This was shown when in the 12th minute a great run from Davies forced
a Cobham defender to clip his ankles from behind to award Merstham a penalty
which defender Craig Vernon stepped up and tucked away. Cobham did not
seem to sit back on this early lead finding out Merstham’s weaknesses down their
right flank which Cobham’s left back Jelley was more than willing to take
advantage of at every opportunity. This good work paid off in the 40th
minute when a cheeky move by Cobham’s Newbury set up space for Golding’s cross
which Cobham striker Tooley turned on and struck the ball nicely to equalise.
Merstham did have a great chance in the dying minutes of the first half when
Davies found himself one on one with keeper McGregor but struck his shot
straight at the keeper. The first half finished 1-1.
Merstham started the second half with an immediate substitution when Geoff
Richards came on for an injured Matt Dymock. He played down the right
flank and filled the spot as he had so well done in the weekend game against
Hartley Wintney. Both teams had chances to go one ahead in the second half, one
of which saw a Danny Fitzgerald free kick hit the post. Unfortunately, neither
side took their chance with the score remaining one a piece at full time.
The result of this took the game into extra time.
Merstham dominated most of the first half of extra time producing set piece
after set piece. Then in the 14th minute a Fitzgerald free kick
curled into the box which no one picked up, including a Merstham player, and
fortunately found the net.
Cobham’s first half performance caused their bench to make two fresh legged
substitutions which helped drastically with serious pressure put on the Merstham
defence. An error was made in the 28th minute when a cleared
ball by Merstham fell to an unmarked Cobham player who took a long range shot to
score that vital equaliser. Extra time finished 2-2.
With a result needed on the night both teams selected their penalty takers.
Each side put away their first 5 penalties and it went to sudden death.
Cobham’s sixth penalty taker, Marcus Rose, stepped up to take the first penalty
in sudden death which Merstham keeper Colin Harris saved with delight.
With pressure back on Merstham, Steve Roleio-Doe stepped forward to take the
final match winning penalty.

Hartley Wintney v
Merstham
Combined Counties Premier Division 12th
February 2005 Hartley Wintney
0 - 3 Merstham
Merstham’s windy Saturday fixture
against Hartley Wintney at the Memorial Ground gained them a clean sheet and
another 3 points making it their third league win in a row.
Both teams started poorly with the weather conditions making a big impact on the
game. Merstham’s first chance came when a cross from Micky Nolan fell for Adam
Carvell who headed just clear of the bar. Apart from this, neither side looked
like scoring as a large percentage of the game was being played in the midfield
area with what looked like to be some strong crunching tackles flying in from
both sides. Merstham did look strong in some areas, set pieces being one of them
and menacing corners from Luke Roberts troubled the Hartley Wintney keeper and
defence. The home side didn’t seem to show any creativity in their play as
shown in recent results which Merstham should have taken an early advantage of
but unfortunately both teams rode on with the score 0-0 at half time.
The second half started with what looked to be a completely different game for
Merstham when in the 46th minute a Balford Brown cross deflected off
the back of a Hartley Wintney defender inside the box for Danny Fitzgerald to
blast into the net to kick start the game. The next few minutes were just as
eventful when Roberts hit the cross bar from yet another dangerous corner and a
minute later a powerful shot by Nolan forced a great save from keeper Richard
Ronchetti. Merstham’s attitude and tempo to the game had really changed which
even forced a smile from Manager Mick Sullivan who praised the team for their
good efforts. Minutes later, a badly timed clearance from the Hartley Wintney
defence, allowed Rhod Davies a chance at goal but he failed to capitalise on
it. More chances were provided to the strike force of Nolan and Davies but
their eagerness to score found them caught offside on numerous
occasions. Several minutes later Davies’s patience paid off when yet another
poor clearance by one of Hartley Wintney centre backs fell into an empty space
between the defender and the keeper and was snapped up by quick thinking Davies
to score Merstham’s second in the 78th minute.
Merstham’s dominance continued when substitute Geoff Richards made his first
appearance for the side this season causing trouble down the right flank with
great speed and determination, eager to impress his Manager. This outstanding
performance by the 18 year old paid off in the 88th minute when a
well timed pass by Nolan assisted Richards to score his first goal sealing the
game with a 0-3 win.

Merstham v Farnham Town
Combined Counties Premier Division 5th
February 2005
Merstham 2 - 0 Farnham Town
Penalty secures another home win
Merstham managed to secure all 3 points in which seemed to be
a disappointing performance by both sides.
Farnham Town travelled to the Recreation Ground without a win away all season
hoping to break the deadlock but unfortunately for them Merstham managed to take
better advantage of the few chances that they had. Both sides started at a slow
pace producing very few opportunities. Farnham had the upper hand in the first
10 minutes with chances from set pieces but lacked the finishing touch from
their recently weakened squad. Merstham failed to act on this by laying back on
the ball allowing Farnham to pursue the Merstham danger area. Merstham changed
their approach to the game when a whipped cross from Matt Dymock shot across the
face of the goal with no man on the end to meet it. This first opportunity
sparked life into the home side creating regular opportunities when in the 31st
minute a deflected shot by Dymock caught Farnham keeper, Mike Brawley, off guard
who could only watch as the ball flew over his head into the net for Merstham’s
first. Farnham did try to get back into the game towards the end of the first
half but it remained 1-0 at the break.
The start of the second half was uneventful with possession staying in the
midfield area with only one good opportunity from a long range shot by Dymock,
which hit the crossbar. Neither side really deserved to win the game but
luckily, for Merstham a 71st minute speedy run by Micky Nolan
surprised the Farnham keeper whose only option was to pull Nolan down in the box
and a penalty was awarded. Nolan duly stepped up and scored Merstham’s second
goal of the game. The game finished 2-0.
Merstham Manager Mick Sullivan commented after the game - “We were pleased to
come away with all three points after a disappointing performance, but then
again you can’t judge every game by last week’s 7-1 victory over North
Greenford”.

Merstham finally put
their poor home record behind them with a superb 7-1 thrashing of 4th
placed North Greenford United making it their first win of 2005.
What on paper seemed to be a tricky tie to play proved not with Merstham getting
straight underway with some great chances in the opening minutes but could not
deliver. However, with the great combination of strikers Rhod Davies and
Mickey Nolan it did not take the home side long to deliver the opening goal in
the 13th
minute when a skilful flick by Davies opened up a Danny Fitzgerald left foot
cross which newcomer Nolan neatly tucked away. Merstham’s tactical play
seemed too much for North Greenford who produced only their first chance in the
17th
minute. In the 35th minute, after a period where neither side
made any headway, a long pass by Kevin Molloy found Nolan who calmly lobbed the
North Greenford keeper, Glasgow, who was caught off guard by Nolan’s laid back
approach to score his second goal. Straight after, Matt Dymock had a good
opportunity when he was brought down in the box and referee James Villance
played the advantage which an effervescent Merstham failed to capitalise on.
North Greenford managed to pull off two good chances testing Merstham keeper,
Colin Harris, who was forced to make some excellent saves in the dying minutes
of the first half. However, North Greenford got caught on the counter
attack when a hard working run by Matt Dymock found an unmarked Nolan who scored
his first hat-trick on his home debut for the club on the stroke of half time.
The second half was just as eventful with Man of the Match Nolan scoring his 4th
goal in the 47th minute with assistance yet again by strike partner
Davies. This superb effort by Merstham caused an unfortunate disruption
and concentration was lost allowing North Greenford’s Hill to score a token goal
in the 50th minute. This glitch did not dampen Merstham’s spirits
when only 4 minutes later another fantastic run by Davies set up Nolan for his
amazing 5th goal in the match. As a result of this North
Greenford took drastic action making all three of their substitutions in the 61st
minute. These fresh legs kept Merstham at bay for a while but the goal
scoring rout continued when a spilled shot by Nolan found an open Davies who
tucked in the 6th in the 85th minute.
Just when North Greenford thought it could not get any worse Merstham crowned
their outstanding performance with an amazing out of the area long range shot by
Adam Carvell scoring the final goal of the game in the 90th minute
finishing with an unbelievable 7-1 victory.

With both teams fielding weakened
squads this proved to be an even game with honours shared. Merstham started the
brighter with Bradley Imms going close with a left flick from a Danny Fitzgerald
cross on 13 minutes. Pressure paid off in the 20th minute when Rhod
Davies was pulled down just outside the box and Fitzgerald duly obliged with a
sweet left foot free kick over the wall leaving the Sandhurst keeper stranded.
Sandhurst 0 – 1 Merstham.
Merstham continued their good football and the Sandhurst keeper made two great
saves direct from Fitzgerald corners. The home side rallied towards half time
but Merstham could have got another goal again from a repeat Fitzgerald free
kick.
The second half commenced with Sandhurst bringing on their Assistant Manager,
Stairs, to bolster their play. This proved successful and Sandhurst looked a
different side pressing Merstham back at every opportunity. On the 62nd
minute a Merstham defender gave an easy ball away and Stairs thundered it
towards the goal taking a vicious deflection to beat keeper Colin Harris.
Sandhurst 1 – 1 Merstham.
Merstham made all three of their substitutions in quick succession – but to no
avail. Both sides had chances and both hit the post and although Sandhurst
finished the stronger, a draw was a fair result.

Merstham fought hard
away to Chessington & Hook but unfortunately only managed a 1-1 draw
costing the mid-table side yet another desperately needed two
points.
After a mixture of defeats and postponed matches, Merstham showed
much promise with an exciting first half performance. Getting
straight underway, with great strength and determination, Merstham
caused the home side to remain inside their own half for the first
10 minutes. Set pieces by Mark Rollings, one
of which the Chessington & Hook keeper Russell just managed to tip
over the bar, dominated the opening exchanges. The home side never
seemed to look much of a threat as long as Merstham continued to
penetrate the Chessington & Hook defence. Sadly, Merstham’s
antagonising pressure caused the home side to lash out
indiscriminately leading to yellow cards for both sides. Merstham’s
patience paid off in the 32nd minute when Rhod Davies
whipped in a cross which defender Charles Funna volleyed into the
top right hand corner of the net giving him his first goal for the
club. The goal seemed to satisfy Merstham who easily slowed down the
tempo of the game producing no real chances from either side
remaining 0-1 at the break. Merstham started the second half as
they ended the first needing more urgency in their game if they were
to maintain their advantage but time ran out when in the 66th
minute Chessington & Hook bounced back to level the score with a
dubious penalty. A disheartened Merstham tried to restore their
first half performance but chances were slim as the home side had
the upper hand showing much better football than they did in the
first half. The game finished 1-1 full time.
Merstham still look thin
in some areas of their play but should be pleased with their
improved performance on recent results.
This result sees
Merstham 13th in the league still struggling to find that
elusive win which they desperately needed as they next face
Conference South side Carshalton Athletic at home on Tuesday 18th
January 2005 at 7.45pm in the Surrey Senior Cup third round.

Horley Town
continue to fight for that vital second place with a comfortable
victory over local derby side Merstham who, unfortunately, could not
show their true colours on the early Bank Holiday fixture adding to
their defensive problems with yet another 3 – 1 defeat.
Prior to kick off, everyone participated in a minutes silence in
respect of the Tsunami disaster. Both teams started slow with some
lazy tackles causing some nasty knocks to individuals on both
sides. After some considerable time, where neither team gained
an advantage, Horley came out on top when, in the 41st
minute, a poor defensive pass by Enver Hasa set up Horley’s Davey
who easily found the net making the home side one up at half
time. Horley remained the better side in the second half with their
first opportunity in the 48th minute forcing Merstham’s
keeper Scott Kenwood to stretch for a cheeky lob which he tipped
over the bar for a corner. The corner was taken by White which
was scrambled into the net by T Jupp.
Horley’s third goal came 11minutes later when a bad
clearance by Kenwood found Horley’s Difford who curled the ball
neatly round the Merstham keeper. After this, Merstham seemed to
lose their nerve conceding several free kicks and forcing the
referee to produce a red card reducing the visitors down to 10 men.
Following this, Merstham made tactical changes using their remaining
substitutions which seemed to knock a little confidence back into
the side and produced a good chance in the 85th minute
when a header by Balford Brown hit the cross bar. Merstham’s growing
confidence was rewarded when in the 90th minute Rhod
Davies forced the home side to concede a penalty which Craig Vernon
gladly stepped up and blasted into the net giving Merstham a token
goal in a game where they were obviously outclassed.

Merstham FC
v Chipstead FC
Combined Counties Premier Division 28th December 2004 Merstham 1 – 3 Chipstead
Merstham confidence chipped away!
Merstham ended the year with a disappointing 1 – 3 defeat to an on
form Chipstead side as their poor home record continued to move the
home side down table despite the support from the largest attendance
of the season so far.
A good start from Merstham caught Chipstead off guard seeing Matt
Dymock’s long range shot take an awkward deflection to send
Chipstead keeper Tony Webb the wrong way and creep into the net in
the 8th minute. This good play continued when goal scorer
Dymock hit the crossbar and Rhod Davies’s quick feet really rattled
the Chipstead defence. Unfortunately, Merstham’s composure seemed
to fizzle out when in the 21st minute Chipstead’s Allen
took a well taken corner to find team mate Walter to head in the
equaliser. Chipstead took the opportunity to settle back into the
game finding their feet. At half time the score remained level.
Chipstead returned the second half the better side still building
their confidence with a series of set pieces and several saves made
by keeper Colin Harris due to poor defending by the home side. In
the 62nd minute, Chipstead’s work paid off when a
brilliant corner by Corbett curled in and found the net. Merstham
retaliated to this with frustration and saw a yellow card as
punishment. After this Merstham seemed to switch off allowing
Chipstead to dominate play on all areas of the field resulting in
another goal in the 72nd minute by Chipstead’s Allen from
yet another corner. Merstham made several tactical changes to try
and salvage something from the game which, despite making a
difference, the damage had already been done resulting in a 1 – 3
defeat and making it Merstham’s seventh consecutive home game
without a win.

Ash United v Merstham FC
Combined Counties Premier Division 4th December 2004 Ash United 2 – 3 Merstham
Merstham had
their third consecutive win away to Ash United on Saturday in what ended up a
very close 2-3 victory for the visitors.
Merstham started well keeping possession of the ball and won the first corner of
the game in the 5th minute which was taken by Matt Dymock, and headed
into the net by Marc Rollings for the first goal of the match. Merstham worked
well together and considering the poor underfoot conditions kept good control of
the ball. The second chance for goal came when Mark Hunter took a long range
but mistimed shot. In the 34th minute Rhod Davies took a shot at goal in the
penalty area which was deliberately handballed by Ash player, Gavin Evans.
Without hesitation the referee awarded Merstham a penalty and Evans was
dismissed. With regular penalty taker Shane Traynor sidelined through injury
Craig Vernon stepped up to take the penalty and blasted the ball home for
Merstham’s second. Now down to 10 men, Ash were looking extremely rattled while
Merstham continued to create many chances for themselves. The score remained
0-2 at the break. Merstham started the second half well and taking advantage of
Ash being one man down. This paid off when in the 54th minute
Rollings managed to breakthrough the Ash defence and lob the keeper just outside
the box for his second goal and Merstham’s third.
Ash, full of determination and with Merstham perhaps looking a little complacent
with their three goal lead, started to come back and had their first real chance
of the game in the 57th minute when keeper Colin Harris had to make a
great save. Ash, all of a sudden, were dominating the game, in the 70th minute
they won a free kick, and Matt Morris scored their first goal. Ash continued to
dictate the play winning tackles and playing well which eventually paid off for
them in the 81st minute when they scored again through some to poor
defending by Merstham. Merstham were now a different side than they were in the
first half with Ash putting the pressure on and looking like they may score the
equaliser before the end of the game. Fortunately Merstham managed to run down
the clock and the game finished 2-3, a somewhat lucky Merstham grabbing all
three points.

Merstham FC – v-
Westfield
Combined Counties Premier Division 20th November 2004 Merstham FC 1 – 1 Westfield FC
After three
successive defeats, Merstham gained a long awaited point on Saturday at home to
Westfield and were unlucky not to take all three.
In the opening exchanges the visitors were playing well keeping the ball mainly
inside Merstham’s half with chances on goal that could have taken them to an
early lead. However, an alert Merstham defence were easily allowed to force the
counter attack resulting in a powerful cross from Steve Roleio-Doe finding Man
of the Match Mark Hunter’s head which unfortunately cleared the cross bar.
Merstham’s threatening play continued winning vital balls and holding possession
in the Westfield area. Then in the 11th minute, Danny Fitzgerald
stepped up for Merstham with a well-struck free kick that curled into the top
right corner of the net to score the opening goal of the game. After the goal
the home side relaxed perhaps just a little too much with Westfield regaining
control through positive possession due to some sloppy passing by Merstham and
being unable to keep ball to ground. Towards the end of the first half a keen
Westfield were allowed too many chances to equalise but Merstham’s defence
kept them in the lead at half time. Merstham’s unenthusiastic approach to the
game continued, giving the Westfield attack several opportunities to try to get
something out of the game. They were given too much space and responded with
improved pressure on the Merstham defence and increasingly more menacing
attempts at goal. Merstham did have chances to easily secure their lead early in
the half but a solid Westfield back four constantly caught an asleep Merstham
strike force offside. The second half progressively looked like turning into a
positive result for Merstham, showing more creativity in their play but missing
some incredible one-on-one chances at goal which had the players falling to
their knees. But in the 86th minute a low drive from Westfield gave
them a well deserved equaliser away to a disappointed home side.

Merstham
manager, Mick Sullivan, looked on as his current side went down to their third
consecutive defeat on Saturday away to his former club, runaway league leaders,
Walton Casuals in a very close fought match where Merstham were expected to be
the underdogs.
Neither side created any real chances in the first half. Both teams looked
strong with some good all round play. The first chance fell to Merstham when
they won a free kick just outside the box in the 31st minute taken by
Matt Dymock but his shot was off target. In the lead up to half time Walton
Casuals won several corners but could not get the ball in the net against a
tight and defiant Merstham defence. The score remained 0-0 at half time.
The second half started and almost immediately, a great chance by Walton Casuals
ended in a first-rate save from keeper Colin Harris. Merstham’s best chance came
in the 53rd minute when an excellent pass from Rhod Davies put
through Steve Roleio-Doe who could have opened the scoring but somehow dragged
his shot just wide. Roleio-Doe got yet another excellent chance in the 72nd
minute but again could not find the finishing touch. For the rest of the second
half the game was even with both sides playing well but in the 86th
minute Walton Casuals James Pearson secured the points with the only goal of the
match when he volleyed the ball home from 20yds to maintain their unbeaten run
of the season with clean sheets in all their home games.
Walton
Casuals manager, Spencer Collins, commented, “This
was probably our most unproductive 90 minutes of the season, when
chances were at a premium, against a very well drilled Merstham side”.

Merstham lost
their unbeaten home run when they fell to a 1-3 defeat at home on Saturday
afternoon against 4th placed Sandhurst Town.
Merstham started well winning a free kick in the first minute, taken by ‘Man of
the Match’, Matt Dymock, which unfortunately fell wide of the goal. Merstham
settled and took control of the game winning several corners one of which was
headed out by the Sandhurst defence allowing Rhod Davies a 10th
minute opening goal. Merstham continued to play well winning a succession of
free kicks one of which saw Sandhurst’s Darren Wilson penalised for a deliberate
handball resulting in him being booked. However, against the run of play,
nifty footwork from Sandhurst’s Steve Stairs put them on level terms in the 27th
minute. An improving Sandhurst continued to put the pressure, on an out of sorts
Merstham, side who were constantly ball watching. Merstham, however, did have a
great chance in the 35th minute when Davies had an attempt at goal
which unfortunately went over the bar. Just before half time, poor refereeing
allowed Sandhurst their second goal from a hotly disputed incident where
Merstham keeper Colin Harris deliberately had the ball knocked from his hands by
the opposition allowing them to score. This was dismissed by referee Gavin
Collins. This judgment so angered Merstham’s Manager, Mick Sullivan that it led
to him being red-carded for persistent arguing with the match officials.
Sandhurst led 1-2 at half time. The second half was mainly dominated by
Sandhurst who had many chances but luckily, Merstham’s defence kept them at bay
until the 86th minute when they put the game out of Merstham’s reach
with their third and final goal.

Merstham FC – v- StainesTown The
Southern Combination Cup Second Round 2nd
November 2004 Merstham 2 – 1 Staines
Town
Merstham, with an impressive all
round performance, were victorious against Ryman League side Staines Town in the
Southern Combination Cup Second Round with a 2-1 win at home.
The game started fast with some excellent football from Merstham who looked
extremely together on the pitch with good crosses and runs with the ball. The
first chance came in the 7th minute when Scott Sullivan had a long
distance shot and won a corner for Merstham. Merstham continued to play well
putting on the pressure and maintaining good possession. However, Staines still
looked dangerous on the break and scored the first goal of the game in the 22nd
minute. Staines started to look fitter and stronger but this did not stop
Merstham going for goal and in the 28th minute a good ball from Neil
Campbell, passed to Jamel Carr who slipped the ball across the face of the goal
but unfortunately there was no one there to apply the finishing touch. Merstham
continued to have good chances on goal and this was finally rewarded in the 40th
minute when Man of the Match Matt Dymock took a left foot long-range shot and
hit the back of the net for the equaliser. Merstham carried on pushing the
Staines defence with more and more chances until the half time whistle when the
score remained 1-1.
Keeper Scott Kenwood, suffering from a first half injury, was replaced at half
time by keeper Colin Harris. Merstham came out in the second half as strong and
determined as the first seeing a great shot at goal by Danny Fitzgerald who hit
the post when taking a free kick.
However, Staines started to put the pressure on which resulted in some excellent
saves by keeper Harris. Staines started to look like they were coming back but
in the 61st minute Fitzgerald put the ball though to Carr who scored
with a top quality finish. Staines looked like they were going to get the
equaliser after a great long range shot at goal which hit the crossbar.
The game finished 2-1, a well deserved win for Merstham and an over-the-moon
Manager Mick Sullivan.

An away win at middle of the table Cobham brought Merstham's current
run to six games without a defeat.
Cobham started well with several shots on goal in the opening
minutes. Merstham didn’t seem to settle into the game losing
frequent possession. However they did manage to pick themselves up
and in the space of a minute won two corners and had their first
shot at goal. As Merstham settled and adapted to the wet conditions
the players pulled together and saw some good chances from wingers
Scott Sullivan and Neil Campbell allowing striker Julius Makmot in
the 33rd minute to produce the best chance of the first
half with a shot that unfortunately hit the crossbar. Even though
Merstham were looking dangerous in certain areas, Cobham were
looking threatening on the break. From this they could have easily
opened the scoring but two great saves by keeper Colin Harris kept
it 0-0 at half time. Merstham were an improved team in the second
half despite Cobham’s Danny Bromton scoring the first goal of the
game in the 53rd minute. Merstham continued to have
missed opportunities and wasted chances due to lack of communication
between players in the box. The game started to get heated with
players disputing the referees decisions resulting in three yellow
cards for the home side. In the 71st minute a badly timed
tackle by a Cobham defender resulted in a Merstham penalty which saw
skipper Shane Traynor step up and score the equaliser blasting the
ball in the centre of the net. Five minutes later Merstham proved
their bouncebackability when a stunning cross from Campbell found
Makmot which he deftly headed home to put Merstham in the lead.
The game finally ended 1-2 after an unbelievable 9 minutes of added
time in which time Cobham almost got an equaliser.

Merstham had a miserable ending to a wet and miserable night with a
disappointing 1-1 draw against Chessington and Hook.
A good start for Merstham saw Danny Fitzgerald with a long range
shot which was, for him, sadly saved. The home side looked
dangerous on the break causing Chessington and Hook some problems
but the away side seemed to overcome this, pressing hard and keeping
the Merstham defence on their toes. In the 36th minute
some good passing from Merstham found Daniel Broad with some space
who fired a long range shot at goal which found the bottom left hand
corner of the net. The score remained 1-0 at half time to the home
side.
The second half got frustrating for Merstham with Chessington and
Hook ahead of the game ruling the midfield play and rattling the
Merstham defence. Merstham were finding themselves chasing the game
whilst Chessington and Hook were looking ever more closer to finding
an equalising goal. At the same time they were getting frustrated
with their poor luck which resulted in some unprofessional tackles
on the Merstham players and several yellow cards were issued by the
referee. Merstham brought on 3 pairs of fresh legs in the middle of
the second half trying desperately to keep their 1-0 lead but
unfortunately in the closing minutes of injury time Chessington and
Hook’s persistence paid off with a long awaited equaliser to finish
the game on level terms.

A troubled
Merstham side played Reading Town in a disappointing second
consecutive draw in the Combined Counties Premier League this
season.
The first 15 minutes was a slow start for both teams but Merstham
went ahead in the game with an excellent pass from Julius Makmot to
set up Jamel Carr who broke dangerously away from the Reading Town
defence to score the first goal of the game in the 17th
minute.
During this period Merstham played some superior all round football
passing the ball well and keeping possession. Even though Reading
had a few chances at goal and a well taken corner, Merstham still
seemed to be in control of the first half with Victor Donkor
dominating the left side. This work paid off in the 42nd
minute when Daniel Broad assisted Donkor with a well deserved goal
to seal the first half.
Unfortunately for Merstham the second half did not mirror the first
as Reading Town came out stronger with more determination and scored
their first goal 2 minutes into second half.
A stunned Merstham side was forced to put themselves back into play
with some good forward attacking. Luckily, a scramble in the box
paid off with a series of shots from the home side allowing Makmot
to score in the 57th minute to put Merstham 3-1 up.
Unfortunately Merstham’s poor second half performance continued with
a constant lack of communication between the players which allowed
Reading to score 2 goals in the space of 5 minutes. In the dying
moments of the game Merstham tried to grab a late winner but, sadly
for them, finished up with a 3-3 draw.

Merstham’s poor form continued with a
disappointing 2-0 defeat away at Godalming and Guildford’s Wey Court
ground. Surprisingly Merstham started well with a good chance from
Enver Hasa and some good crosses from Matt Dymock but it didn’t take
long before Godalming and Guildford star number 9, Darren Wheeler,
scored in the 12th minute of the game with a very well
taken goal. After this a despondent Merstham could not keep their
heads up losing frequent possession and were again regularly caught
out of position; a feature of recent games. The home side seemed to
be dangerous at every given chance although Merstham did have a
opportunity in the 29th minute when Mark Hunter broke
away. But unfortunately he clashed with a defender, fell in the box
and was subsequently booked for diving. Towards the end of the
first half the game got heated with Godalming and Guildford still
pressurising the Merstham side from all angles of the pitch. The
score remained 1-0 at half time.
The start of the second half was better for Merstham and made them
realise they were still in with a chance but this didn’t last long
as Godalming and Guildford took back control of the game. Then in
the 81st minute they scored their second goal emphasising
the lack of communication between Merstham’s defence and keeper
Colin Harris summing up Merstham’s lack lustre performance.

Merstham started their Premier League Cup campaign with a swiftly
played, well controlled win over battling side Westfield.
The home side tested Westfield’s defence from the start with a great
chance by speedy striker Julius Makmot and some calm direct
passing. Merstham seemed to be in their element playing some
talented football keeping most of the possession. In the 22nd
minute Chris Boulter found the back of the net but unfortunately for
Merstham this was disallowed as he was deemed offside. Merstham
continued to have a series of good chances at goal with a free
header by Makmot and chances by Matt Dymock and Victor Donkor but
could still not manage to score. The score remained 0-0 at half
time.
The second half started much as the first with Dymock supplying a
string of corners into the box. Makmot had yet another great chance
on goal but he was sadly off target. This style of play continued
through much of the second half with Westfield only managing a few
chances at goal. With the score level at full time the game went
into extra time with the possibility of penalties.
Merstham pressurised the Westfield defence to try and find the
winning goal. Donkor had a good attempt on goal but unluckily hit
the post. In the 12th minute of extra time, Shane
Traynor was brought down in the box and was awarded a penalty. A
tense Merstham crowd then saw Traynor blast the ball into the centre
of the net to give Merstham a well deserved lead.
In the second half of extra time, Westfield tried to get back into
the game but failed to break the concentration of a disciplined
Merstham defence giving Merstham the victory that will hopefully see
them return to the good form of earlier in the season.

A
Merstham side hit with injuries and suspensions crashed out of the
FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round with a 0-3 defeat by Wick on Saturday
25th September at the Recreation Ground.
The home crowd saw Wick score in the second minute due to Merstham’s
poor defence after Wick had won a corner, crossed it in and scored a
disputed goal. This shook the Merstham side but didn’t seem to
convince the players to pick themselves up. Merstham looked
sluggish allowing Wick to constantly win possession and playing some
good football. However, Merstham started to improve their game with
some good crosses by Gavin Gordon and started to win possession, but
the score remained 0-1 at half time.
The second half started well for Wick. Merstham’s poor defence were
rescued only by keeper Colin Harris making several good saves. In
the 53rd minute Wick had a good shot on goal which,
luckily for Merstham, hit the post. Merstham continued to lose
possession as Wick put the pressure on and in the 66th
minute Wick were rewarded with their second goal. With twenty
minutes to go Merstham were starting to look like they had a
reasonable chance of scoring but were giving too many of their
chances away. All Merstham’s substitutions were made in the final
quarter of the game in the hope that fresh legs would improve their
chances of getting back into the match. This proved to be in vain
when in the 85th minute Wick managed to score their third
and final goal to take the tie.

Merstham maintained their excellent undefeated start to the Premier
League with a 5-1 conquest over Hartley Wintney.
Merstham opened the game with some stylish one touch football
hassling the Hartley Wintney defence with some great chances from
set pieces and shots by James Cameron and Jamel Carr. However in
the 15th minute and against the run of play Hartley
Wintney were given a corner which was headed home by John
Leech. This did not appear to dent Merstham’s confidence and they
continued to play well and were rewarded 6 minutes later with a well
taken equaliser from Steve Roleio-Doe. Further pressure from
Merstham resulted in a 37th minute goal from Cameron
giving the hosts a 2-1 lead at half time.
Merstham impressed the home crowd in the second half with some good
all round play and started to find gaps in the weakening Hartley
Wintney defence with a 53rd minute goal from ‘Man of the
Match’ Carr. Merstham refused to be satisfied with their 3-1 lead
and relentlessly attacked the visitor’s goal with further attempts
from Dymock and Carr. In the 86th minute a shot by Enver
Hasa was spilled by the Hartley Wintney keeper allowing Matt Dymock
to find the net. A minute later Merstham scored again with a cheeky
move by Gavin Gordon who teased the opposition keeper and rolled the
ball home for the fifth and final goal.
115 people attended the Beacon Ground to see Merstham defeat
Hassocks in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup last Saturday.
Merstham had an uneasy start giving the ball away at vital moments
as in previous games, but Hassocks failed to make the most of the
chances Merstham presented to them. In the 36th minute
Hassocks gave the ball away to provide Matt Dymock with an
opportunity to cross the ball to an unmarked Steve Roleio-Doe who
neatly slipped it past the oncoming Hassocks keeper to give Merstham
the opening goal. The next ten minutes were uneventful but on the
stroke of half time a forward run within Merstham’s half saw Jamel
Carr pass to Gavin Gordon who scored Merstham’s second goal to make
it 0-2 at half time.
After a heated half time talk by Manager Mick Sullivan, Merstham
started the second half much brighter, looking more calm and
collected. Hassocks responded to Merstham’s better play and were
rewarded by a 65th minute goal. However, only 3 minutes
later Merstham won a corner which was taken by Danny Fitzgerald that
was poorly cleared by the Hassocks keeper allowing Roleio-Doe to get
his second goal. Despite this setback, Hassocks never gave up but
lacked the final spark to break the Merstham defence. The final 1-3
scoreline somewhat flattered a rather uninspired Merstham.
A much improved Merstham had a successful 2 – 1 win against
Southall on the Bank Holiday fixture. Merstham started with the better
possession with a Steve Roleodoe chanceat goal in the 8th minute.
However, Southall soon came back and scored with a hotly disputed penalty in the
14th minute after Chris Boulter was deemed to commit a foul.
Merstham picked themselves up and played well but were still losing possession
at vital moments. The tables turned when a cleared ball by Southall set up
Steve Roleodoe who skilfully chipped the keeper to equalise in the 22nd
minute. Merstham were denied the lead when a corner from Danny Fitzgerald found
itself in the net but was dismissed by referee Barrie Gale due to pushing in the
box. Following the disallowed goal Southall continued to pressurise Merstham but
good football from Merstham’s defence and goalkeeper Colin Harris kept the game
level at half time.
In the second half Southall gained the upper hand with a clever overhead kick
and a series of set pieces. But it was from a Merstham set piece in the 53rd
minute that saw Southall’s undoing when Danny Fitzgerald curled in a free kick
to enable Chris Boulter to place the ball in the net. Southall continued to
besiege the Merstham goal but a series of spectacular saves from Merstham’s man
of the match, goalkeeper Colin Harris, secured Merstham a well deserved 3
points.

Merstham
started this season’s FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round with a 2 – 1 away victory
at Selsey. Merstham had a slow start allowing Selsey most of the possession but
after eight minutes Merstham had their first attempt on goal with a header from
Victor Donkor which was denied by Selsey Keeper Harding. Merstham picked
themselves up, making several attempts at goal with some great football from
Jamel Carr.
In the 25th minute a Matt Dymock pass broke the deadlock seeing
Steve Roleodoe find the back of the net for Merstham’s first goal. Two minutes
later, just as the celebrations died down, Selsey equalised with a left side
free kick, headed out, but pushed back in by the Selsey number 11. Merstham
tried to get the lead at half time with good shots by Matt Dymock and Steve
Roleodoe but a determined Selsey defence kept them at bay.
Merstham started the second half with some poor defending and losing the
majority of the possession. This led to some scrappy and ill-tempered play
seeing the sending off of Merstham’s Glen Garman along with a Selsey player
reducing each side to 10 men. As a result of this, Merstham manager Mick
Sullivan revised his tactics to a 3-4-2 formation in the hope of winning the
game. The tactical change meant two substitutes were made and in the 66th
minute Merstham’s Danny Fitzgerald and Enva Hasa came off and were replaced by
Scott Sullivan and Shayne Traynor. Merstham started to play some good football
yet still losing frequent possession. In the 76th minute, Merstham’s
talented Jamel Carr scored the game winning second goal assisted by Victor
Donkor. In the 85th minute another substitution was made with goal
scorer Steve Roleodoe off and replaced by Gavin Gordon.
Although
Merstham defeated Selsey, they still did not play their best football as shown
in their 6 – 1 victory over Raynes Park Vale last week. To stand a chance of
beating Hassocks they will have to improve their game.
