Merstham Grange School
I think this web site is wonderful, but I was
surprised to find no mention of Merstham Grange School or its
Headmistress Cecile Hummel. Miss Hummel was well known in the area
and lived for a time in a cottage near the then Golden Wheel
Restaurant (1950s). I know she was still in the area in 1963, as she
wrote and Directed "The Unsheathed Sword" for the Reigate Centenary
Pageant, in which I appeared in the last "modern" scenes with my
father driving his "Stewart's School of Motoring" car. I attended
the School in 1953/4 when unfortunately I had to leave as the age
range for intake changed, (it had previously been 5 to 16 years).I
have very happy memories of this school and although only 7 or 8 at
the time still remember the names of some of my friends : Phillipa
Shawcross, Quentin Mathews (who lived in Warwick's Wold),
Christopher Martin (whose family owned a farm), Penny Sleep, Marian
Crawford (who lived in Harps Oak Lane), and Jacqueline Pinner. The
last three went with me onto St Joseph's Convent in Redhill. I later
attended Bishop Simpson's School, and went onto Redhill General
Hospital to do my General Nursing and Midwifery.
I would be pleased to have any information about the
school, is the building still there? Or hear from anyone who
remembers it. Does anyone out there have any pictures? It was a
happy school and even the meals were good! We had to take a blanket
and lie down for a rest after lunch before we were allowed out to
play in it's large grounds. Many of us were sad to leave when the age
range was changed. I lived in Merstham from 1952 when my family
moved from London to my marriage (at St Katherine's Church) in 1969.
I look forward to any news. Rosemary Major (nee Stewart).
