Village ‘Jolly-Up’ to Mark VE Day |
|
|
A street party to celebrate the 60th anniversary of VE Day was staged in Merstham on Sunday 8th May 2005. From noon until 2pm, people in the village were invited to go along to the forecourt of Styles’ newsagents and Bairstow Eves at the top of School Hill to help mark the occasion. After a short service at 12.15pm, at which people were invited to lay flowers to those from the village who fell in the Second World War, there was a sing song and refreshments. Ted Hickman, Chairman of the Merstham Royal British Legion, said “It was just a ‘jolly-up’. We sang some of the old songs like Run Rabbit Run and had a few drinks and some sandwiches.” A number of War Veterans were present who were happy to speak of their experiences between 1939 and 1945. The legion festooned the corner of the street with bunting and flags in a bid to create the atmosphere of May 8 1945. Tomas Marteinsson, of Bairstow Eves and Gillian Styles and her son Ron, from the newsagents, have been praised by the party organisers for allowing the forecourt to be used. |
